Valentino's

Joanie dances for money,
She’s trying not to miss a trick,
Because nobody cares anymore,
That little Tommy’s sick.
He got himself a fever,
And the doctor he won’t come,
Until Joanie’s got the money,
So she dances for her son.

What do you see
In the bottom of that glass,
Salvation, redemption,
Or echoes of the past?
Whatever your troubles,
There’s only one place to go,
Join our congregation,
Down at Valentino’s.

Danny picks up the bottle,
To drink his sorrows away,
His girl’s gone and left him,
And all his lady would say.
Is that she’s got another man,
Who says he’ll treat her right,
Something’s have to be better,
Because all we did was fight.

What do you see
In the bottom of that glass,
Salvation, redemption,
Or echoes of the past?
Whatever your troubles,
There’s only one place to go,
Join our congregation,
Down at Valentino’s.

Through the door walks the lady,
Who wants to leave but has to stay,
She’s got nowhere else to go,
Since the government took her job away.
The banks took back her home,
Her children now reside in care,
And when she returns home at night,
Her lover’s no longer there.

What do you see
In the bottom of that glass,
Salvation, redemption,
Or echoes of the past?
Whatever your troubles,
There’s only one place to go,
Join our congregation,
Down at Valentino’s.

No one asks you your story,
Because they’ve each got one of their own,
Telling of heartbreaks and failures,
Reasons why they’re all alone,
It’s just a place where the lonely go,
Somewhere to spend the night,
To forget they’ve got no one,
When they turn out the light.

What do you see
In the bottom of that glass,
Salvation, redemption,
Or echoes of the past?
Whatever your troubles,
There’s only one place to go,
Join our congregation,
Down at Valentino’s.

Billy Bob & Janey

Strange girl sitting all alone,
So many faces all unknown,
And Uncle Jim won’t let you go to bed,
You’ve got to do what Uncle Jim said,
Strange girl you feel so alone.

Little boy who knows no other way,
Drinks to forget each and every day,
And when it starts you rush towards the fight,
Just another way to forget tonight,
Little boy there is no other way.

Billy Bob and Janey their love was true,
There was nothing for him she wouldn’t do,
Hold his hand as he pierced the vein,
Held back the tears as he called her name,
Billy Bob and Janey their love was true.

Strange girl and little boy met one night,
Sat and talked about each others lives,
Billy Bob talked about his mother,
Janey cried as she recounted her lovers,
Then they kissed and they said goodbye.

Jennifer

Jennifer sits on the sofa drinking coffee,
Jimmy junior plays with his Lego on the floor,
They’re discussing heartbreak on the tele,
Jennifer jumps at the bang on the door.
Is it going to be the man to repossess the tele,
Or a neighbour to complain about your wheely bin,
Is it going to be the postman with a parcel,
Why do you think it will be him?

Did you ever have a bad dream?
Did you ever wake up feeling blue?
Do you ever think about him?
Does he ever think of you?

Jennifer walks up and down the high street,
Invisible to all as she walks through town,
Pausing at the corner to comfort little Jimmy,
Fighting the temptation to look around.
Will you see the young man from the grocers,
Or a relative standing outside Mothercare,
Will you see a teacher from the nursery,
Why do you think you’ll see him there?

Did you ever have a bad dream?
Did you ever wake up feeling blue?
Do you ever think about him?
Does he ever think of you?

Jennifer closes the curtains on the evening,
Jimmy Junior’s in bed and she’s all alone,
The house seems so silent since he left,
Do you still dream he’ll be coming home?
Will he come back to bring you roses,
Or with papers to take little Jimmy away,
Will he come back to tell you that he’s sorry,
What would you want him to say?

Did you ever have a bad dream?
Did you ever wake up feeling blue?
Do you ever think about him?
Does he ever think of you?

Did you ever have a bad dream?
Did you ever wake up feeling blue?
Do you ever think about him?
Does he ever think of you?

Smith

Smith what are you doing now?
Did all your dreams come true?
You wanted to see the world,
And the world to remember you.

The one with the girls on your arm,
A different one every night,
I never told you but it’s true,
How I looked up to you,
And now I wonder where you are tonight.

Everyone said we were like brothers,
A friendship I never wanted to end,
Those Penkhull nights,
And the times we’d fight,
Through it all you were my friend.

Smith what are you doing now?
Did all your dreams come true?
You wanted to see the world,
And the world to remember you.

At the weekend all we’d do is party,
Chasing the girls all over town,
Infamous in every pub,
Famous for living it up,
The biggest party animals around.

I had dreams of a family but you,
You wanted the world to know your name,
You’d sing to the world,
Love every girl,
All you ever wanted remember was fame.

Smith what are you doing now?
Did all your dreams come true?
You wanted to see the world,
And the world to remember you.

As I sit with my family this Christmas,
I wonder what became of you,
Did you see the world?
Love all those girls?
Your dreams did they ever come true?

Alison

You said you first met in June,
As the school year came to an end,
The boy at the back of the class,
Never seen without his friends,
The party up by the lake,
And you were skimming stones,
When he sat down beside you,
You felt like you’d come home

Alison he was your first,
You said he would be your last,
Alison does time heal the hurt,
Can you ever forget the past?
He hurt you he made you cry,
Are you sorry now that he’s gone?
They all come up and ask you why,
What do you say? Alison.

The weeks began to turn to months,
You thought it would last forever,
But as your teenage years rolled by,
You wondered should you be together.
You began to fear the nights,
Lying alone in your bed,
You’d hear footsteps on the stairs,
And cover up your head.

Alison he was your first,
You said he would be your last,
Alison does time heal the hurt,
Can you ever forget the past?
He hurt you he made you cry,
Are you sorry now that he’s gone?
They all come up and ask you why,
What do you say? Alison.

Now you spend your days in the park,
Too scared to venture home,
Creeping through the front door after dark,
Hoping you’ll be alone.
You search the house for drink,
In all his usual hiding places,
Why do you stay what do you think,
If he’s dry no more hidden faces?

Alison he was your first,
You said he would be your last,
Alison does time heal the hurt,
Can you ever forget the past?
He hurt you he made you cry,
Are you sorry now that he’s gone?
They all come up and ask you why,
What do you say? Alison.

You’re standing at the bottom of the bed,
The pillow still in your hand,
You’ll tell them that you loved him once,
Hope the magistrate understands.
When you’re sitting with no place to go,
The sun shining through the bars,
Nobody can take the smile off your face,
You’re free of him now. You are!

Alison he was your first,
You said he would be your last,
Alison does time heal the hurt,
Can you ever forget the past?
He hurt you he made you cry,
Are you sorry now that he’s gone?
They all come up and ask you why,
What do you say? Alison.
