Alison

You said you first met in June,
As the school year came to an end,
The boy at the back of the class,
Never seen without his friends,
The party up by the lake,
And you were skimming stones,
When he sat down beside you,
You felt like you’d come home

Alison he was your first,
You said he would be your last,
Alison does time heal the hurt,
Can you ever forget the past?
He hurt you he made you cry,
Are you sorry now that he’s gone?
They all come up and ask you why,
What do you say? Alison.

The weeks began to turn to months,
You thought it would last forever,
But as your teenage years rolled by,
You wondered should you be together.
You began to fear the nights,
Lying alone in your bed,
You’d hear footsteps on the stairs,
And cover up your head.

Alison he was your first,
You said he would be your last,
Alison does time heal the hurt,
Can you ever forget the past?
He hurt you he made you cry,
Are you sorry now that he’s gone?
They all come up and ask you why,
What do you say? Alison.

Now you spend your days in the park,
Too scared to venture home,
Creeping through the front door after dark,
Hoping you’ll be alone.
You search the house for drink,
In all his usual hiding places,
Why do you stay what do you think,
If he’s dry no more hidden faces?

Alison he was your first,
You said he would be your last,
Alison does time heal the hurt,
Can you ever forget the past?
He hurt you he made you cry,
Are you sorry now that he’s gone?
They all come up and ask you why,
What do you say? Alison.

You’re standing at the bottom of the bed,
The pillow still in your hand,
You’ll tell them that you loved him once,
Hope the magistrate understands.
When you’re sitting with no place to go,
The sun shining through the bars,
Nobody can take the smile off your face,
You’re free of him now. You are!

Alison he was your first,
You said he would be your last,
Alison does time heal the hurt,
Can you ever forget the past?
He hurt you he made you cry,
Are you sorry now that he’s gone?
They all come up and ask you why,
What do you say? Alison.

Heather (I Forgive You)

Sitting on a park bench waiting for the world to catch me up.
(Catch me up),
Saw a girl across the street trying to catch the bus,
(Catch the bus),
When she looked across the street she didn’t recognise,
(Didn’t recognise),
The man watching the world pass by with tired eyes,
(Tired eyes),
I wonder where she’s going who to meet today,
(Meet today),
Her sister for a coffee or a lover to blow her mind away,

The girl has gone and I’m sitting all alone,
(All alone),
The silence is so final when you are on your own,
(On your own),
I think about the past and a girl I knew,
(Girl I knew),
All I remember now were her eyes were blue,
(Eyes were blue),
Her hair was red and had a temper to match,
(Temper to match),
How we used to argue, how I made her laugh,
(Made her laugh),

She’s the reason why I’m sitting here,
(Sitting here),
She’s the one who went and left me,
(Went and left me),
But although I didn’t know it at the time,
(At the time),
Who tore us apart being scared was my crime,
(Was my crime),
When you’re in love it’ll last forever,
(Last forever),
Or so you think can you forgive me Heather?
(Forgive me Heather).

(Can you forgive me Heather?)
(Can you forgive me Heather?)
(Can you forgive me Heather?)
(Can you forgive me Heather?)

Still sitting on that bench as the girl returns from town,
(Returns from town,)
I’m guessing it’s the sister as the girl’s wearing a frown,
(Wearing a frown,)
Walking up the street she spots and smiles at me,
(Smiles at me,)
The kind of smile you give to one of your family,
(Your family,)
But my families gone because of a girl I knew,
(Girl I knew,)
Who broke me heart, left me what could I do?
(Could I do?)

When you find a love that might last forever,
(Last forever,)
You’ve got to take the chance but I forgive you Heather,
(I forgive you Heather,)
(I forgive you Heather,)
(I forgive you Heather,)

Joanie

Joanie stands on the street corner,
Waiting for a kiss that’ll never come.
Looking for the man with the promises,
The father of her unborn son.
She stands and watches the passers by,
Watching them go about their lives,
Into the arms of their lovers,
But who’ll sleep with Joanie tonight?

Will it be the boy at the back of the class?
Or the lad in a baseball cap?
Will it be the man she sees as a father?
Waiting as she returns to her flat.

Joanie watches the children as they play,
Once she would have laughed and joined in,
As they pretend to be the famous movie stars,
On the posters looking down upon them.
She watches and smiles at the pretty faces,
Who pass her by under her street light,
Illuminated yet hidden in shadows,
Who’ll caress her body tonight?

Will it be the boy with a twinkle in his eyes?
Or the lad in a baseball cap?
Will it be the man she sees as a father?
Waiting as she returns to her flat.

Joanie where did it all go wrong?
You were always top of the class,
Friends with all and enemies of none,
That Joanie is left in the past.
Joanie was it all for that that young boy,
That first kiss as he turned out the light,
Left you wanting him more than he wanted,
Joanie he won’t be coming back tonight.

Danny Boyle

O Danny Boyle where are you now?
Have the years been good to you?
O Danny Boyle are you laughing,
At the rest of us like you used to?

A playground bully king of the slide,
When you said jump we’d say how high,
Our dinner money brought your chips and peas,
Got what you wanted and never said please.
I remember we fought once over a girl,
At the time I thought she meant the world,
You hit me and like so many I fell down,
You get a different view sprawled on the ground.

O Danny Boyle where are you now?
Are things the same as you were used to?
O Danny Boyle do you remember,
The boys and girls who were scared of you?

You fought the police and the visiting fans,
A right of passage you thought made you a man,
No one was safe even the foolish girls,
Who clung to you thought you were the world.
I saw you once what was her name?
I don’t remember, I just remember the pain,
On her face as you kissed her goodbye,
What had she done for that black eye?

O Danny Boyle where are you now?
Do you consider life still one big fight?
O Danny Boyle what do you feel,
As your fist connects what’s it like?

I heard you made you made it to the top,
As a business man and new age fop,
Do you regale your new found friends,
With anecdotes of life on the Boothen End,
How it was always fighting you and I,
You’d throw, connect and then I’d try,
I’d miss you’d hit and finally I’d see,
Danny boy, do you want to be me?

O Danny Boyle where are you now?
What you doing with your life?
O Danny Boyle when you look back,
Do you find it easy to sleep at night?

Claire

I first met her at the record store,
She was working there,
And I was buying a record by the Cure.
We got to talking at the till,
She stole my cigarette lighter,
You know I think she’s got it still.

I asked her out and she said maybe,
I had to pass a test,
Like a knight in one of those stories.
I asked her to tell me what I must do,
And she laughed,
And said I had to prove that I was true.

We went dancing the very next night,
I made her laugh,
She was there when I turned out the light.
That summer we were never apart,
If you’d have asked,
I would have said that she stole my heart.

Then one day the moment I woke up,
I turned around,
And it seemed to me I had lost my hope.
The pillow next to me was empty,
Claire had gone,
Not even a letter waiting by the coffee.

I search for Claire all of the time,
No matter where,
I look she will not be found.
Even as I walk through town today,
I hear her laugh,
But when I turn around she’s gone away.
