Sophie & The Gentleman

She met him for the first time,
In a bar this side of town,
A gentleman who listened,
Who didn’t look around,
He bought the drinks and they talked,
About people they both knew,
He made her laugh and she had to ask,
If all of this was true?

So long you’ll be back,
You never said goodbye,
So long and I’ll be here,
Promised I wouldn’t cry.
So long so many days,
I’ve been sitting here,
So long one more day,
Before I wipe away the tears.

That night they went out dancing,
Before ending in a curry house,
He said her eyes were beautiful,
Then he kissed her on the mouth,
She wanted to ask herself,
Why what had she done right,
To find a man to banish them,
Who’d gone before tonight?

So long you’ll be back,
You never said goodbye,
So long and I’ll be here,
Promised I wouldn’t cry.
So long so many days,
I’ve been sitting here,
So long one more day,
Before I wipe away the tears.

Walking back hand in hand,
Together through the city streets,
He talked about the world he’d seen,
And people who she’d like to meet,
Then standing on her doorstep,
She looked into his eyes,
Saw the love she’d been looking for,
Before she invited him inside.

So long you’ll be back,
You never said goodbye,
So long and I’ll be here,
Promised I wouldn’t cry.
So long so many days,
I’ve been sitting here,
So long one more day,
Before I wipe away the tears.

Early the next morning,
She went to put the coffee on,
But her eyes fell on the pillows,
And she saw that he had gone,
Those before who disappeared,
Brought tears to here eyes,
But not this one he’s not gone,
She won’t believe that he lied.

So long you’ll be back,
You never said goodbye,
So long and I’ll be here,
I promised I wouldn’t cry.
So long so many days,
I’ve been sitting here,
So long one more day,
Before I wipe away the tears.

Sophie sits in the window,
In a bar this side of town,
Looking for a gentleman,
Who won’t be coming round.
