Broken Hearts

Baby we both know,
We’ve been messing around.
You and me,
For what seems like forever.
You’ve been a friend,
A confidant,
And so much more,
Than just my lover.

When we were young,
Just kicking around,
On the city streets,
Where we grew up,
We were always together,
Where ever we were,
In the back of my car,
But we never spoke of love.

So what happens now
With you and me?
If I asked you,
What would your answer be?
What come of us
When we’re apart?
We’re matching pieces,
Of our broken hearts.

As we lived our lives,
We decided to part,
Go our separate ways,
Baby you and me.
But we’d always return,
To one another’s arms,
Promising ourselves,
We’d one day be free.

I’ve had my lovers,
And I’d be a fool to believe,
You’d go through your life,
Swearing chastity.
But they were never enough,
They were never you,
My heart was someplace else,
And I think you’d agree.

So what happens now
With you and me?
If I asked you,
What would your answer be?
What come of us
When we’re apart?
We’re matching pieces,
Of our broken hearts.

We’re both getting older,
We’re losing that fight,
There’s only one winner,
And that’s old Father Time.
Can we still carry on,
This crazy romance,
Keep saying goodbye,
Like two ships in the night.

I never really asked,
This question of you,
I never really thought,
I’d want to settle down.
But baby will you stay,
For longer than tonight,
I can’t imagine my life,
Without you baby around.

So what happens now
With you and me?
If I asked you,
What would your answer be?
What come of us
When we’re apart?
We’re matching pieces,
Of our broken hearts.
